What is TikTok and how does it work? Well, have you ever come across a TikTok video even though you’re not on the platform? Odds are you’ve probably seen at least one viral lip-syncing TikTok, or screencaps on Instagram or Twitter of meme-worthy TikToks.
One great example of this type of trend spreading across social media is the “It’s Corn” viral trend. Here’s an example of a video that repurposes the song with new, on-brand visuals on Twitter: This meme originated on TikTok, where songwriter and TikTok user @Schmoyoho remixed the already-viral corn-heavy interview from the Recess Therapy account into an even bigger hit. At the time this article was being written, the song has been used in more than 1.2 million TikTok videos and has more than 10 million likes.
That’s the power TikTok has in the current social media landscape. As marketers see memes and trends take off, it stands to reason that with the right content, the platform can help you reach millions of people and make your brand go viral.
But what is this app? How does TikTok work? And can you actually use it to reach your target audience? By the end of this article, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the platform, and whether or not it’s right for your brand. Feel free to jump to the sections you most want to explore: What is TikTok?
TikTok is a video-sharing social media platform where you can create, edit, share, discover and watch short, vertical videos—from just a few seconds long, all the way up to 10 minutes. And it’s continuously changing. While TikTok made a name as a lip-syncing app, it’s become much more. “TikTok as we know it today didn’t exist five years ago, and we anticipate the TikTok of 2027 to look similarly unique. TikTok has been a disruptor in so many ways, so the biggest opportunity for brands at that point in time probably doesn’t exist yet. However, building a strong network and community around your brand will help serve as a foundation for what’s next,” TikTok told us.
When was TikTok created?
While the name TikTok has gained familiarity in the past few years, the basis of the app has been around for a while. It originated as an app known as Musical.ly in 2014, before being acquired by ByteDance in 2017, a tech company based in Beijing who already had an app named TikTok. Musical.ly and TikTok officially merged platforms in 2018.
Who created TikTok?
Half of TikTok, the aforementioned Musical.ly, was created by Chinese entrepreneurs Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang. And TikTok’s original form was created by ByteDance—the company that owns the platform today.
Who owns TikTok?
TikTok is owned by tech company, ByteDance. ByteDance already owned TikTok—called Douyin in China—and merged it with Musical.y after acquiring it in 2017 to create the wildly popular platform we know now.
How does TikTok work?
On TikTok, users can customize their videos with filters, stickers and background music, then share them with the TikTok community. Once shared, people can like, comment on, download or share a video. Content is found by users in three feeds: The Friends Tab, Following Feed and the For You Page, where the TikTok algorithm recommends content based on what you like.
TikTok makes video content creation easy with a number of regularly-enhanced tools. Here are some of those features:
1. Create videos
Users can create TikTok videos by recording them directly in the app, or by uploading videos from outside the app. The video recorder lets you choose how long you want your video to be, with a max length of 10 minutes.
2. Add music
Music is the cornerstone of the TikTok platform. Users can even discover new content by clicking on a track link and conducting a search of clips that use the song. So adding a popular song in your video will increase your chances of trending in the community.
3. Co-create content using duets
TikTok also boasts features like duet, which helps nurture engagement within the community. This feature does exactly what the name suggests—it lets you create a video with another creator and will split the screen in half to show both cameras. Most use this feature to sing or dance to the same song, or they develop corresponding videos much like comedy shorts. 4. Add filters and effects
It’s easy for users to edit their videos with different filters and effects. You can even add stickers, emojis, text, transitions, GIFs and time effects to make your videos more compelling. 5. Live stream
TikTok also comes with a feature that lets you stream live video broadcasts. But note that this feature is only available for select users with at least 1,000 followers.
Who uses TikTok?
While TikTok is known for its popularity with younger users (47% in the US are between 10 and 29 years old), it’s aging up, with 42% of users aged 30-49 and 20% between 40 and 49. This makes it a great place to reach a wide audience. Source: Statista
As of January 2022, TikTok’s user base skewed 57% female and 43% male—although these reported numbers are not inclusive of all genders. And the platform’s user base is extremely active, watching around 24 hours of content on the app every month.
Most of the app’s users are from the United States, with 136.5 million users as of April 2022. Indonesia comes in second with about 99 million users and Brazil lands in third with 74 million. TikTok’s widespread and growing popularity makes it a valuable app to use if you have an international audience.
Why is TikTok so popular?
Most of us hadn’t heard of TikTok until a couple of years ago. Since then, it’s become a household name, launched the careers of new celebrities, and is a go-to platform for favorite celebrities and brands to create viral moments.
In Q1 2022, TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide, and surpassed Google as the most popular web domain. In Q3 2022, TikTok broke records again as the world’s highest-grossing app.
Let’s get into some features that fuel its popularity: Source: SensorTower
Fueling viral trends
One of the reasons TikTok is so sticky is because it’s a discovery machine. It’s often where trends start, as TikTok trends are frequently spread to other platforms, and into popular culture.
If you’re wondering how to go viral on TikTok, there are a few unique elements on the app that fuel trends and user loyalty:
TikTok Sounds
TikTok sounds are a key part of the platform experience—so much so that TikToks with sound perform 2.2x better than those without. People can use songs and sounds in their videos by selecting them from TikTok’s library, or saving them from other videos.
When you use a song or sound that’s trending, you boost your chances of going viral. The songs or sounds that take off can spark new memes, create a billboard hit, inspire cross-platform content or simply become part of the larger conversation. Like we mentioned—trends often start on TikTok. If one of your TikTok videos performs well on the app, repurposing that same content elsewhere can help you find success on other platforms, as well. We published the above video on TikTok to jump on the viral “It’s Corn” song, but also published the video on Instagram to keep riding the trend wave on another platform.
But a word of warning: if your video uses a song, avoid copyright issues and double check that you’re legally allowed to use that song on other platforms.
Using a tool can make repurposing content easier by cutting out the need to runaround to each social platform.
With Sprout’s TikTok integration, you can publish a TikTok video solely on TikTok, or publish one video across multiple platforms with the touch of a button. Hashtags
Hashtags are a key part of viral trends and challenges. Using the right ones can give you a major visibility boost.
They’re also a great way to find your community on the platform. #BookTok is a great example. This hashtag connects you to videos about book recommendations, bookstores and more. Tags like this can foster niche communities and become extremely popular among them—the BookTok hashtag has over 80.9 billion views. Collaborative tools
TikTok is all about connecting with your community and your friends. Their recent move to replace the Discover feed with a Friends Only feed supports that.
Collaboration is built right into their video creation tools. TikTok stitching, for example, allows you to add your own commentary or reaction to existing clips, including viral clips. TikTok user Hank Green often uses this to answer questions or explain the science behind popular videos. Learning how to stitch on TikTok can help you get started on the platform by piggybacking off of existing content before creating your own.
Challenges
Users and brands alike come up with challenges that eventually go viral and encourage user participation. These challenges are also highly effective for enticing non-users to join the platform.
A viral video of TikToker Nathan Apodaca (aka Doggface208) skateboarding while drinking Ocean Spray cranberry juice inspired the brand to create a challenge, encouraging participants to recreate the video. #DreamsChallenge now has 21.1 million views. We could mention more. But TikTok moves so quickly that by the time you read this article, there will likely be entirely new ones.
Video format
Put simply, TikTok has the type of content that consumers want: bite-sized videos. In fact, 66% of consumers say that short-form video is the most engaging type of content.
TikTok popularized this format to the point that other platforms added their own short video feeds, like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Appropriately, we’ll leave this section short and sweet.
Video downloads fuel more shares
Users on the platform can freely download videos from other users and share them to other social media platforms to reach more people. This is perhaps one reason why the platform has gained so much popularity so quickly.
Since each video has a TikTok watermark and the username of the original creator, it leaves little room for plagiarism. It gives due credit and when people watch those downloaded videos on other platforms, they’ll know exactly who to follow for more.
How to use TikTok for business
With trends like #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt, and 49% of users saying TikTok helped them make purchase decisions, the app is a prime place to reach new consumers.
However, marketers are still not utilizing TikTok to its full potential. Our latest Sprout Social Index™ found that only 39% of marketers were using TikTok.
Many marketers are still in the process of understanding how TikTok works and how it fits into their social media content strategy, social media marketing strategy and larger marketing campaigns.
Here are a few popular ways brands use TikTok to help get you inspired:
Launch a branded hashtag challenge
We’ve already talked about how using viral trending hashtags can extend your reach. But you can also create your own trends. TikTok challenges are campaigns or trends that encourage people to participate by performing tasks like demonstrating a talent, showing how you use a product, using a filter, lip syncing and more.
In Vogue’s #MakeItVogue challenge, Vogue partnered with TikTok to launch a campaign inspired by the Met’s About Time exhibit. It encouraged people to celebrate fashion history by posting videos recreating fashion of the 19th-century using everyday objects. To date, the hashtag has 3.6 billion views, and the challenge brought Vogue from 0 to 128K followers. Vogue also launched a less formal challenge with the hashtag #ifeelstrong. This challenge encourages people to post videos of themselves doing something that makes them feel powerful. This challenge hashtag has amassed 565.3K views. There are a few ways to promote a branded hashtag challenge on TikTok. Officially partnering with TikTok on a branded challenge is pricey, but partnering with creators on the platform or creating a competition can help boost your hashtag. Just ensure you follow copyright laws.
Work with influential content creators
Influential content creators on TikTok have millions of followers and drive tons of engagement that brands can leverage to amplify their efforts. Brands can collaborate with creators on a variety of campaigns, from content featuring their products or services to jumpstarting a branded hashtag challenge and more.
For Universal Pictures, TikTok influencers played a major role in the promotion of their movie, “The House with a Clock in its Walls”. They partnered with 10 influencers who each created ‘magical’ stories using the hashtag #FindYourMagic. These videos garnered a total of 1.3 million likes and even resulted in 19k+ more videos from other users.
The brand also gained 11k+ new followers in just six days. To date, the hashtag has amassed over 80 million views on the platform. Don’t be afraid to experiment
The beauty of TikTok’s fast pace is that if one video flops, you can move on and try again. Bari, social media manager for Auntie Anne’s, recommends reusing old content with new sounds in her TikTok Bootcamp.
TikTok’s status as a fast-moving trend incubator means experimentation is rewarded, and many brands are cementing their TikTok presence by testing new tactics on the platform.
Analyze your tests by using TikTok analytics to identify which of your posts are most successful and should be recreated. While TikTok only saves your data for 60 days, Sprout’s Reporting and Analytics tools don’t put an expiration date on your post performance data. You can measure how your TikTok content performs over time, and even against the content on your other platforms. Engage, engage, engage
Responding to comments and questions on TikTok is just as important as responding to them on other platforms. Monitor your comments and respond—even a simple response or “like” can mean the difference between gaining a fan, and losing one.
You can even respond to comments with a new TikTok video. This is an innovative and ultra-interactive way of engaging with your community, and filling out your content calendar.
It’s all too easy to lose track of TikTok comments when you’re monitoring conversations across multiple channels. This is where using a social media management tool to streamline comments from all of your platforms into one hub comes in handy.
Final thoughts: Is TikTok a good fit for you?
TikTok marketing can be extremely powerful when executed strategically. Contrary to popular belief, the app is home to a widespread, diverse set of users and brands—from B2C to B2B and nonprofits.
For any brand considering getting started with TikTok, it pays to start with research. Validate that your core audience, or the new audiences you hope to reach, are on the platform. Then, develop a short-term plan for content testing and iteration.

For a successful social media marketing strategy, keeping tabs on the performance of your various initiatives is essential, especially on Instagram. This helps you know when to adjust a strategy or when a new idea is working.
But when it comes to digging into your Instagram metrics, it may not always be clear where to start.
This article will introduce you to Instagram insights, discuss why it’s so important to measure them and showcase the top eight Instagram metrics to watch. What are Instagram metrics
Instagram metrics are measurements of performance that let you in on how your Instagram content is doing and how your audience is responding to it. Instagram metrics tell you things like how many people viewed or interacted with your content.
We’ll talk about specific metrics later on, but some of the key Instagram metrics you should be measuring include impressions, reach and follower growth.
Why you should track your Instagram metrics
If you manage your Instagram account without ever looking at your analytics, you’ll be left in the dark when it comes to understanding the results of your efforts.
These efforts likely coincide with company or department goals (or even just your own Instagram KPIs), which will naturally help inform which Instagram metrics you should be reporting on.
Therefore, when answering the “why,” you’ll also reveal your key IG metrics to report on. Here are three reasons why you should be tracking your Instagram metrics.
1. Instagram metrics let you know which content your audience prefers
If you’re testing different various types of content, you need to check out your post metrics to see which types are getting the most attention. Having this knowledge helps you to build out an Instagram content strategy that resonates with your audience by consistently posting their favorite types of content.
2. Instagram metrics keep your strategy in line with company objectives
If your current goals are to increase your company’s follower count, you’ll want to make sure you’re actually making that happen. Same goes for if you’re wanting to increase story views or post engagement. You need to be able to check the metrics to measure growth to see if you’re hitting your KPIs.
3. Instagram metrics help you measure specific campaign success
If you’re running a major campaign on Instagram (let’s say for a product launch, holiday sale or important partnership), you want to know how well the campaign is performing. Your Instagram metrics let you see this so you know if you need to adjust your messaging or not.
How to view insights on Instagram
In order to view insights and metrics on Instagram, you need to have an Instagram business or creator account. There are a couple of different ways to access your insights from the Instagram app. (Keep in mind that these are only accessible on the mobile app, and not on desktop.)
First, head to your profile and tap on the Professional dashboard button. The very first option is your account insights. Tap See all to access your Instagram metrics.
Second, you can tap the hamburger menu icon in the top right corner of your profile and then tap Insights to access them directly.
You can find all of the below metrics inside your Instagram Insights—or you can take advantage of a third-party analytics tool like Sprout Social to get even more in-depth reporting.
8 Instagram metrics you need to track performance
If you’re still feeling a little lost, don’t worry, we’ve outlined several key Instagram metrics to help you get a feel for what to look for and where to find it.
And as a bonus, we’ll even make sure you know exactly where to capture most of these Instagram metrics within Sprout Social.
1. Impressions
What this metric tells you: How many times your content is being seen.
Your impressions let you know how many individual times a piece of content has been viewed.
This is useful because a lot of impressions can mean that a certain piece of content was well-liked, and people wanted to come back to it. However, when it comes to Instagram ads, too many impressions can lead to ad fatigue and reduce conversions.
Quickly locate impressions in Sprout
To find your impressions in Sprout, head over to your Instagram Business Profiles Report. Within the Instagram Impressions section, you’ll see the total and percent change over the specified time frame. 2. Reach
What this metric tells you: How many people are seeing your content.
If you think reach sounds a lot like impressions, you’re not alone.
These two metrics are similar but confusing enough that we’ve dug deeper into these topics in great detail via Reach vs Impressions and Instagram Impressions (if you’re inclined to learn more).
To keep it brief here, all you need to know is that your Instagram reach indicates actual views of your content while impressions means it was displayed but may not have generated a click or any other form of engagement.
Quickly locate reach in Sprout
Your reach is located in the exact same space as your impressions. You can see total and percent change right below your impressions metric, making it easy to see both at once. 3. Engagements per follower
What this metric tells you: Engagement with your content relative to your follower count.
While it may be tempting to compare your Instagram performance to that of the big guns (think Oreo, Starbucks, Nike, etc), you don’t want to do that unless your audience size is roughly the same.
Why?
Because brands with millions of followers should be racking up thousands of likes. However, if you have just a couple thousand followers, you’re naturally not as likely to accrue similar results in sum, but that doesn’t mean you’re not still performing exactly as you should be.
And that’s where engagement rate (or engagements per follower) comes in and can help make sure you’re evaluating your account fairly.
The formula for measuring engagement rate on Instagram looks something like this:
Total Engagements / Follower Count * 100 = Engagement Rate
Reporting on this metric over time will give you a sense of overall performance trends, though you can certainly calculate it for specific posts as well to get an idea of the types of content that resonates with your audience.
How to measure Instagram engagement rate with Sprout
In order to find this Instagram metric, you’ll want to first gather the total amount of engagement you received for a given time frame.
Within Sprout, navigate to the Reports tab and under Profiles by Network, click Instagram Business Profiles.
Near the bottom of the Overview tab, you may notice a section with engagement rate already calculated, but note that this rate uses impressions (not follower count). 4. Follower growth
What this metric tells you: Whether your follower count is steadily increasing or declining.
When evaluating a growing (or shrinking) Instagram follower count, context is important, especially if you’re experiencing random spikes or drop offs due to something like a one-time promotion or paid social ads.
Make sure to measure your follower count over time and keep the above context examples in mind so you know exactly what has contributed to the growing numbers. Ideally you’re seeing sustained, gradual growth over time, which indicates that people are liking what they see from your content and they want to make sure they see more of it.
Additionally, understanding what is or isn’t working is also essential within the context of your overall Instagram marketing strategy. You want to make sure you know the types of content to continue creating and which may need tweaking.
Though total followers may be seen as a vanity metric to some, it ultimately represents the potential reach of your content. This impacts the performance of other IG metrics like engagement, so continued focus on organically growing your audience is still as important as ever.
How to measure follower growth with Sprout
Sprout enables you to see all kinds of information about your follower growth, from a comprehensive growth chart to percentage growth. Select the time period during which you want to measure your follower growth and then see the differences in followers gained and lost for that reporting period with the Instagram Business Profiles overview. You can then dive into the Post Performance Report, using the same time period, to specifically see what content resonated and what didn’t perform so well. 5. Comments received
What this metric tells you: How engaging your content is.
There’s a major difference between likes and comments when it comes to evaluating Instagram performance metrics.
Likes are fairly easy to dish out and oftentimes you can’t be 100% certain a post was truly seen by your followers. With comments, it’s crystal clear. Whether positive or negative, comments left on your posts are an indication that your content had some kind of impact, or at least enough for the individual to take the extra step to leave feedback.
This type of engagement, especially when positive, is a strong factor in community building and establishing a loyal fanbase. Anyone can double tap with ease but those who go out of their way to comment are the ones to keep an eye on.
Managing comments in Sprout
Depending on the size of your Instagram account, it may be manageable to simply review your posts one by one to view and record comment counts. But with Sprout, the work is done for you.
Using the Instagram Business Profiles Report mentioned earlier, comment totals over a specified time period appear alongside other engagement metrics. You can then cross-reference comment counts with the actual feedback being received to determine sentiment and whether or not your content is working as desired. 6. Most engaged hashtags
What this metric tells you: Hashtag performance.
While the fickle Instagram algorithm may sometimes wreak havoc on your content strategy, hashtags have proven to be one of the most reliable ways to keep your momentum going.
By using hashtags that are relevant to your industry or what your audience is searching for you can help keep reach and engagement in check.
Instagram users can include up to 30 hashtags on each post, but be sure to use that quota wisely through research and learning from performance over time. You may be surprised by how often less is more when it comes to hashtags.
Measuring hashtag performance in Sprout
To maximize this particular IG metric, you’ll want to spend time reviewing your Instagram Outbound Hashtag Performance within Sprout.
As displayed in the following chart, you get a full breakdown of your hashtags organized by both usage and engagement in the Instagram Business Profiles Report. You can use this data to inform future hashtag decisions, especially when it comes to engagement performance relative to other efforts. 7. Referral traffic
What this metric tells you: Instagram’s impact on your website traffic.
Referral traffic describes the people who come to your domain from other sites, without finding you on a search engine. When someone visits a link from social media or a website and they end up on your, Google analytics recognizes the visitor as a referral. You can also use UTM codes to track precisely where these visits come from.
A common tactic for social media posts involves linking out to a website’s specific landing page, product page or even just the home page depending on the type of action you’d like your followers to take upon seeing your post.
But on Instagram, this can be a bit more challenging because the only place to display a clickable link is inside your bio. You also have the option to include URLs within your captions, but either way, tracking referral traffic from Instagram can be tricky.
How to track referral traffic
As mentioned, because Instagram doesn’t allow clickable links within your posts, one great way to track referral traffic from a particular campaign is with UTM parameters. UTM parameters are tags you can tack onto a URL that lets Google Analytics (or other tools) know exactly where the user referred from.
If you’re implementing any landing pages specifically for an IG campaign, you’ll want to read up on how to set up your own UTM parameters to ensure they’ll work correctly.
You can also check your social network referral traffic in Google Analytics to see how much traffic Instagram has sent your way, including distinguishing between Instagram (your bio link clicks) and Instagram Stories (your story swipe ups). 8. Instagram Stories metrics
What this metric tells you: How popular and engaging your Instagram Stories are.
Arguably one of the most essential components to current Instagram marketing strategies involves the use of Stories.
These are useful in a number of ways, most notably because they provide another dimension of content for your audience. The disappearing nature of the photos and videos gives you even more freedom and flexibility than your feed does.
When it comes to Instagram Stories, there are a few good metrics to keep tabs on such as Story Replies, Story Taps Back and Forward, Story Exits and Impressions.
Using Sprout to view Instagram Story stats

“Make it go viral.” An assignment so notorious it’s become a cliché.
Social marketers know creating viral posts isn’t their most important goal. In fact, it might distract them from reaching their target audience and taking care of their team’s mental health. social media managers
what’s the most ridiculous job goal / objective / target a boss has given you?*
*other than «make it go viral»
— Matt Navarra (@MattNavarra) September 22, 2022 That doesn’t mean you can’t learn something from viral posts and campaigns. Strategic viral marketing boosts brand awareness, increases engagement and builds loyalty. The right viral content can help brands gain mega fanbases.
We’ve found that the brands whose viral marketing achieves long-term, sustainable growth follow these nine principles. Use them to expand your brand’s social reach (and they might even help you go viral).
What are the chances of going viral?
First, how likely is it that your post will go viral? According to a Stanford University study from 2016, the chances of going viral are one in a million. However, trending platforms like TikTok offer more opportunities for brands to blow up on social. But there are no quick hacks to produce a viral video. Going viral requires equal amounts of skill and luck.
Follow the content best practices of these nine brands who have created viral magic to improve your chances.
1. Read the room
Understanding the people you’re trying to reach is the first step towards going viral. If you haven’t already, define your target audience.
A target audience is the group of people who are most likely to be interested in your brand or product. Members of this group often share common interests, hobbies and behaviors. Zero in on your target audience by monitoring who follows your brand, how they interact with you and why they follow you. Keep a pulse on the external factors impacting them, too.
For example, during the first COVID lockdown, the Shedd Aquarium knew their audience was wrestling with uncertainty and anxiety. To help bring happiness to their feeds, they shared a video of a penguin named Wellington exploring the aquarium and meeting other animals at Shedd. Penguins in the Amazon?! 🐧🌴
Some of the penguins went on a field trip to meet other animals at Shedd. Wellington seemed most interested in the fishes in Amazon Rising! The black-barred silver dollars also seemed interested in their unusual visitor. pic.twitter.com/KgYWsp5VQD
— Shedd Aquarium (@shedd_aquarium) March 15, 2020 Soon after sharing, delight ricocheted across social media. The original post received 3.7 million views on Twitter alone and kickstarted a viral “Penguin Tour” campaign.
No products were being sold. No special deals touted. The genius of this campaign boiled down to sharing joy and adorable penguins.
2. Post at the right place and time
Each social platform has a unique audience and serves a distinct purpose. Facebook is critical for customer care. TikTok is known for its discoverability. Instagram is a hub for influencer partnerships. And that’s only scratching the surface.
Every platform serves a vital role in the social media ecosystem. After you narrow down your target audience, figure out which platforms they spend the most time on and why. Map out their digital journey with your brand.
Once you identify where, focus on determining when your audience is most engaged. Posting at optimal times can help your content stand out in crowded feeds.
Sprout data determined these are the best average times to post on each platform: Facebook: Mondays through Fridays at 3 am, Tuesdays at 10 am and noon
TikTok: Tuesdays 2–3 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 1–3 pm
Instagram: Mondays at 11 am, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am–1 pm, and Thursdays and Fridays at 10 am and 11 am
Twitter: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 9 am
LinkedIn: Tuesdays 10 am to noon Ultimately, the best time for you to post depends on the behavior of your target audience. Experiment and find what works.
When Google jumped on the #NationalCoffeeDay trend, it was clear their target audience was most active on LinkedIn. The post received almost 45,000 likes and over 560 shares from entertained fans—an impressive rate for the platform. When and where is your audience spending the most time on social? Use your answer to guide your publishing cadence.
3. Make an emotional connection
Creating an engaged brand community requires building an emotional connection with your followers, whether you pull at their heartstrings or make them laugh until they cry. Get in touch with the emotions you want your audience to associate with your brand.
Use your content to make them feel like they can trust you and you understand them. According to the 2022 Sprout Social Index™, company alignment with personal values is 74% more important to consumers than it was in 2021.
By building an emotional connection, you compel people to take action—from following you on social media to shopping at your stores to making a positive impact on the world.
In Starbucks UK’s viral, award-winning #WhatsYourName campaign, they tell an emotional story trans/nonbinary people know all too well. The video uses the famous Starbucks ritual, writing a customer’s name on a cup, as a symbol of recognition and acceptance. The campaign reinforces that everyone is welcome at Starbucks.
When creating an emotional connection with your audience, lean into your shared values.
4. Quality over quantity
To increase your chances of going viral, invest your resources into making quality content. Avoid deploying too many posts or posting just for the sake of it. That can overwhelm your audience, burn out your team and hurt your engagement rate.
According to Sprout’s research, you should post across all your platforms no more than 11 times per day. Follow these cadence recommendations: TikTok: one to four times per day
Instagram: one to two times per day
Facebook: four to five times per day
LinkedIn: no more than once per day
Twitter: three to four times per day
Pinterest: no more than once per day In UGG’s latest viral campaign, #UGGSeason, they share two videos per day on their brand’s TikTok account, a share rate that’s within our recommended range. The campaign videos feature models, creators and actresses donning the famous boots. In recent months, UGG has transformed their brand image, with their boots becoming an essential high fashion staple. By only posting a couple videos per day, they retain a sense of sophisticated mystery.
So far, #UGGSeason has 64.2 million views on TikTok. Remember: quality is always more chic than quantity.
5. All about the “a” word: authenticity
Authenticity is more than a buzzword: it’s an essential aspect of every viral post or campaign.
There are no quick hacks that can help you build long-term exposure. For example, adapting a tongue-and-cheek brand voice just because your competitor is doing it isn’t authentic. Your sophisticated audience will see right through you.
Instead, create content that is genuine, original and rooted in your brand’s identity.
Ask yourself if your content checks every box in the authenticity checklist: Is your content relatable?
Does your audience feel like you “get” them?
Are you being true to your brand?
Do you have an effective content mix—tailored to your audience—on each channel? The UK bakery, Get Baked, oozes authenticity. When the bakery was reported to a local Trading Standards agency for their use of “illegal sprinkles,” the brand’s boldness on social turned the incident into a viral sensation. Sprinklegate Update:It’s not good news.We have heard back from Trading Standards, and have been told that we must…
Posted by GET BAKED on Monday, October 11, 2021 Seemingly overnight, they gained hundreds of thousands of followers.
This incident is a good reminder that overly polished content often falls flat. Keep it real with your community.
6. Tap into your audience
When creating content for your brand, don’t forget about an invaluable resource at your fingertips: user-generated content (UGC).
UGC is unpaid or unsponsored social posts that people share about your brand, product or service.
To source the best UGC, ask your audience for the type of content you want to share. Create campaign hashtags and social media contests to encourage your audience to get in on the fun.

Over 17 million of us took the Challenge and donated over $115 million to the ALS Association. THANK YOU! AMX0035 slows progression of ALS and extends life for people living with ALS. This is the first approved ALS treatment funded by Ice Bucket Challenge donations. In 2016, we invested $2.2 million to help develop and test AMX0035. THANK YOU to the entire ALS community for their advocacy in pushing the FDA to approve early. And THANK YOU to everyone living with ALS who participated in the clinical trial, particularly those who have passed. We are especially thinking of Pat Quinn and Pete Frates, who championed the Ice Bucket Challenge and inspired the world. We thank them and their families, and the entire ALS community, for changing the fight against ALS forever. THANK YOU!Read more: https://bit.ly/AMX0035-approved
Posted by The ALS Association on Thursday, September 29, 2022 The challenge was simple. Film yourself getting drenched with ice water, make a pledge to donate money to the ALS Association and challenge your friends to do the same.
In total, the challenge had over 17 million participants and raised over $115 million dollars. The challenge quickly accelerated ALS research beyond what many could have imagined.
In 2022, the ALS Association announced that the challenge directly led to the funding of a new ALS treatment that will improve people’s lives.
Don’t underestimate the power of your audience.
7. Make your content useful enough to share
Creating highly relevant, useful and educational content is an easy way to improve your chances of going viral. To increase your social media shares, make your content easily digestible and shareable. Think infographics, short-form videos and interactive content.
In National Geographic’s viral tarantula video, they share the fascinating process that unfolds as the spider sheds its exoskeleton. Many people will never get close enough to see this 7-hour molting process in person. The sped-up video is an educational tool (and incredibly mesmerizing). The video currently has 1.5 million views and almost 3,000 likes on Twitter. Replicate its success by sharing something informative in a shareable format.
8. Partner with the right influencers and creators
The creator economy is booming. Influencers and creators are now an essential asset in your overall marketing strategy, and they can up the ante on your viral marketing campaign.
Influencers and creators can increase your brand’s reach, boost awareness and help bolster your community.
When you find an influencer or creator you’d like to partner with, ask these crucial questions: Does this person’s brand align with our brand’s mission?
Which metrics matter to us most? (Note: if you’re trying to go viral, consider seeking out creators with high average impression metrics)
Does our audience overlap with this person’s audience? By partnering with Dolly Parton and a handful of other creators, Taco Bell took its relaunch of Mexican pizza to the next level. Each video in the viral Mexican Pizza: The Musical campaign garnered thousands (sometimes millions) of views.
Whether you’re launching a new product or trying to expand your audience, working with the right influencers/creators can help your brand surge on social.
9. Consider current trends
Staying immersed in internet culture and up to date on current trends can help you capitalize on viral moments. A word of caution: don’t try to jump on every trend.
Use social listening to discover which conversations are happening around your brand and industry.
If your community’s conversations intersect with a viral post or campaign, then you’ve captured lightning in a bottle. Act fast to add your own special twist to the trend.
For example, Chipotle created a viral masterpiece with their take on the #corn trend by recruiting the corn kid himself. With 7.8 million likes, 250,000 shares and 40,000 comments (and counting), their video is internet gold.
There’s more to going viral than meets the eye
While going viral isn’t the be-all end-all, there are important lessons we can learn from brands who have shot to social media stardom. Even if you can’t control your luck, you can optimize your content to extend your reach for the long-term.
Use this list of best practices to fuel your content strategy. Your content will resonate with the right audience—whether you go viral or not.
